Low bushy plant from the Caucasus with many pretty pink flowers veined deep pink from spring to midsummer (and later if it rains). Can be dormant after flowering if dry, then leafy overwinter. Average to dry soil in sun or light shade. 45cm.

Geranium albanum is a species of cranesbill that has caused some people problems when trying to grow it for the first time, but if you look at where it comes from in the wild, and how it grows there, you will find that it is actually fairly easy to please.

It comes from that south eastern corner of Europe where winters tend to be damp and cold, and summers very hot and dry.  It has adabted to this climate by producing somewhat tuberous roots from which it produces a modest rosette of fresh green leaves in autumn, keeping them overwinter.  In spring the leaves are joined by stems holding a decent number of the light pink flowers with deeper veins, in the open with no competition it will get to c. 45cm.  If there are surounding taller plants then Geranium albanum will scramble up through them to keep it's flowers in the sun.

Flowering has usually finished by midsummer when it will die down completely if the weather is hot and dry, becoming completely dormant for late summer and early autumn.  The new foliage will appear once there has been rain in autumn.  Because of this it is best not to apply any extra water in the second half of summer, it can rot off if to damp then.  If moving, transplanting etc, it is best to do this in autumn or winter (or early spring) rather than after flowering.  Pot grown plants can be planted at any time.

There is also a much rare, slower growing, dwarf form, to about half the normal size, that we have small quantities of occasionally.
