Brilliant shining red flowers to 1.5m. Distinctive olive green foliage. Average to good soil in sun.

One of the best of the older varieties, Miscanthus sinensis 'China' makes tight clumps of upright stems clad with distinctive olive-green foliage.  From the second half of August the silky flowers will start to appear, metallic red with whitish tips, the strongest colour starts to fade after a few weeks.  The flowers will start to turn to a silvery buff as they go to seed and the fluffy seeds hold in the heads well into winter.  The gales of winter will blow away the seeds leaving the skeletal frame of the head behind.

As with all deciduous grasses leave the stems and seedheads standing throughout the winter for their attractive effect and also to provide some extra protection to the crown of the plant.  Once the worst of the winter is over, but before much new growth in spring, cut the old stems back to near ground level.  This is done in February or March here.
