Brilliant for those who love brown flowers! Tall spires of rusty orange brown flowers to 1.5m in summer from deep, glossy green evergreen rosettes. Short-lived perennial.

Digitalis ferruginea is one of the very useful perennial foxgloves that usually last for 3-4 years in the garden before flowering themselves into oblivion.  Typically producing one flower spike in the second season from seed and doubling each year.

But perhaps the best feature is the rosette of foliage which is aprticularly attractive, and useful, in winter.  Dark green shiny leaves that are relatively narrow compared to other foxgloves make a good contrast with other plants.  The rosette and bolt upright spires of flowers make Digitalis ferruginea an ideal companion to many ornamental grasses such as Panicum virgatum cultivars and Deschampsia cespitosa forms.

Best in drained soil in sun or part shade.

From southern Europe and western Asia.  Sometimes known as Rusty Foxglove.
