This perennial fennel is one of the tallest plants we grow. Clumps of ferny cut grey-green leaves to 60-80cm send up strong stems topped with large yellowish flowers in summer. The seedheads are most attractive and architectural persisting well into winter.
This Mediterranean species can grow to 3m when grown in ideal conditions of well drained soil in full sun. Not too impoverished soil though, or it won't have the strength to attain full height. The flowers appear from May-June and the seedheads still look good at least six months later.
An excellent plant for sandy, gravelly soils that dry out in summer but have some moisture in winter. Looks great when grown with a mix of other Mediterranean style plants. Also very good with some of the larger grey leaved grasses like Poa labillardierei and Eragrostis elliottii.
Ferula communis 'Gigantea' is the same thing.
