Many Helianthus are a bit of a hassle in the garden, either being annuals or being thugs! But, Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' is a safe, reliable and very attractive addition to autumn borders and works well in traditional settings such as cottage gardens or in more modern meadow or prairie style plantings.
A very tough, hardy and long lived plant 'Lemon Queen' needs little maintenance except cutting the last season's stems back to ground level at the end of winter or early spring before new growth starts. If you find that it gets too tall or flops in your garden it could be too well looked after or overshadowed by other plants or buildings. To counter this you can give Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' a "Chelsea chop", ie towards the end of May cut the new growth back by about one third. This encourages branching and usually creates a shorter, stockier plant typically to 1.5m-1.8m.
Often sold under other names, we have acquired it by mistake labelled Helianthella quinquenervis. A selection of hybrid origin from North America, parents supposed to be Helianthus pauciflorus and H. tuberosus (Jerusalem Artichoke!).
