Neat clumps of glossy green foliage and short spikes of bright reddish-purple flowers in summer. Compact plants for the front of the border. Average soil in sun. 25cm.  Perfectly hardy and best cut back hard in late winter.

Much used in Piet Oudolf's new wave or naturalistic style garden designs, not surprising since he named and introduced it.
