The Nursery

Our Nursery
is located on 2 acres of open land on the north side of South Lopham (See Map). The land was pasture for many years before we moved onto it and this has given the soil a high nitrogen content (from artificial and natural fertilisers!) so many plants grow vigorously. The soil is a mixture of South Norfolk Clay and Breckland Sand with a reasonable amount of humous, this gives that fabled “well drained but moisture retentive soil” and means we can work it almost year round.

We started work on the site on the 2nd October 2000 and have used most of the land for planted stock. Stock BedsThis gives visitors the chance to see mature sized plants and some larger group plantings, all offering a great advantage over a visit to a garden centre. You get the chance to see what a plant does in the soil.

Stock bedsThe open site means that we do suffer from strong winds on even the calmest of days and windbreaks have been planted to cut this down. This also means that the plants are grown quite hard and you can be fairly sure that if we say a plant looks good in January it does look good in January.

After six years on site most of the nursery is now cultivated and many plantings are now quite mature. 2005 saw the erection of a new shade tunnel, an extension to the sales area.

The location is convienient for trips and holidays to the Norfolk and Suffolk Coasts and the Norfolk Broads. We are within one hour of Norwich and only a little further from Ipswich and Cambridge. See the links page for ideas on other places to go after a visit to the nursery.

We are a working nursery and do not have a cafe or other facilities on site. You are most welcome to eat packed lunches etc whilst visiting but if you require food there are pubs in most villages around the nursery.
