One of the brightest blue leaf grasses with a clumping habit and rye-like flowers to 75cm. Let it seed a bit as plants usually live 4-5 years. Drained soil in full sun.
Our preferred blue-grey leafed grass where you want something bigger than the little hedgehog like Festuca glauca cultivars. There are several similar species of Elymus with varying shades of blue or grey leaves but unfortunately many of them suffer from mildew and/or rust, Elymus hispidus is largely free of both these diseases.
Quickly making a decent clump of relatively broad leaves to 30-45cm tall and across the flowers are usually produced in year two onwards and are between 60-75cm tall in midsummer. As with other fast growing plants it seems to exhaust itself so the few self-sown seedlings are very useful to prolong it's existance. It is not a nuisance.
Best in poor, dry soil in full sun where it will be more compact, a better colour and live longer.
From temperate regions of the northern hemisphere.
Often mis-labelled in the trade and in gardens and can be found labelled as both Elymus magellanicus (which is lower growing and very mildew prone) or Elymus glaucus which is something completely different!
