A small grower compared to most Miscanthus. Tight clumps of upright stems clad with olive leaves and topped with coppery red flowers to 1.5m. Outstanding red autumn foliage.
A slower and more compact plant than the more familiar forms of Miscanthus sinensis tend to be but this has some of the best autumn foliage colour to be found. The olive green leaves start to turn reddish at the tips as early as June and by late August should have good colour, by November Miscanthus oligostachyus 'Afrika' is normally almost completely glowing red.
The flower plumes are a little thin compared to Miscanthus sinensis but they are a good warm red to start and become a delightful, upright, fluffy feature in seed through autumn and winter.
Good soil, not too dry or too wet in full sun.
