An excellent compact plant with greyish green summer foliage and an upright habit topped with airy heads of reddish flowers in autumn. Blood red-purple autumn foliage colour is the main feature. Ordinary soil in full sun. 75cm.
Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' is a more manageable plant for small spaces as it is less vigorous and arching than some of the better known varieties. Pale grey-green foliage from spring will start to produce some autumnal colour from midsummer if the weather is cool enough but really starts to pick up from August when the flowers will also emerge. Mostly grown for foliage colour but it colours better in Continental Europe and in North America than it seems to in the UK so some photographs in books and magazines may be misleading!
The flowers are light pinkish red and dainty in upright panicles and at their best in August and September. The seedheads will last into winter but are not strong enough to reliably last throughout winter. An excellent contrast with some of the more delicate Asters such as Aster x herveyi and A. 'Octendgloren'.
