Probably the most reliable form of Pennisetum alopecuroides for the UK. Clumps of fresh green leaves and masses of fawn caterpillar-like flowers in autumn to 50cm.
This German cultivar has long been the most available form and while other more recent cultivars may have better flowers they rarely produce them well in the UK climate. The flowers start to appear in August and will still be fresh in October, the seedheads then tend to last most of the winter making a domed clump to 50cm tall and potentially double that across.
As with all deciduous grasses, cut it back hard, to near ground level, in late winter or early spring to make way for the new growth.
Best in full sun, in soil that doesn't dry out too much in summer.
Also sometimes spelt 'Hamelin'.
