Clumps of glossy green foliage with blue-grey upper surfaces and short stems bearing dense spikes of purplish flowers in early spring to 25cm.

An easy and very hardy evergreen ornamental grass for ordinary soil in sun, or it will take a little shade. Cut back hard in late winter to tidy it up.

Grows in short grassland in central and eastern Europe.
