Stipa robusta makes an ideal ingredient in prairie or meadow style plantings as long as it has some space around it, so best in a sparsley planted gravel bed or similar. Has proved to be perfectly hardy as long as it isn't too wet at the root but does tend to be relatively short lived so Stipa robusta is one of those ornamental grasses best replaced with new seedlings when 3-4 years old.
The common name of Sleepy Grass is supposed to refer to it sending grazing animals to sleep!
From south and west USA and adjoining Mexico.
