Clumps of softly bristly leaves and arching stems of warm tawny flowers in late summer and autumn. Reddish autumn foliage. 1.2m. Drained soil in full sun.
A rarely seen ornamental grass well worth trying if you have suitable conditions, it isn't the hardiest so avoid frost pockets. The foliage and flower stems stand well overwinter and can still be looking good into March the following year. Deciduous so cut back to near ground level at the end of winter.
Native to much of Africa, Middle East and Asia.
Red grass, Kangaroo grass.
The subspecies japonica has now been absorbed within Themeda triandra but I retain the name for garden use at the moment as this form seems to be hardier.
Synonyms include (amongst many others!): Themeda japonica, Themeda triandra,
Diarrhena japonica£4.50
