Slightly bigger than the popular Dianthus cruentus, this has similar ruby red flowers in dense heads on wiry stems to 60cm. Clumps of greyish leaves. Ordinary soil in full sun.
With the current trend for more natural style gardens these perennial but mildly self seeding species of Dianthus are very useful in the garden. Dianthus ferrugineus is not so often seen as others like D. carthusianorum and D. cruentus but it still has a useful place as it fits between those in size.
Try growing Dianthus ferrugineus with light wafty grasses such as Melica persica and Stipa lessingiana.
From Spain and Portugal.
