Well behaved clumps of big leaves produce strong, branched stems of tightly coiled ruby red buds that slowly expand and open to a clear cobalt blue to 1.2m in early summer. Shade, even fairly dry.
A fine plant for a shaded border, we grow ours near one of our willow windbreaks and although the soil dries out in summer and it gets overshadowed at times, Symphytum asperum always gets on and produces a good display of fairly well sized flowers every year.
Deserves to be much more widely grown.
From Europe and the Middle East.
