AGM Clumps of fleshy leaves from a bulbous plant and a steady stream of wiry stems topped with pinkish violet flowers all summer to 50cm. Well drained soil in full sun.
The flowers are slightly scented during the day and probably pollinated by butterflies (most other species are night scented and attract moths). All other parts of the plant smell strongly of garlic when crushed or cut - so don't touch them if you don't like garlic.
Tulbaghia do best in a nice warm, baking position in the UK and will not do well in cold or damp gardens. Think Mediterranean style and you shouldn't go far wrong. They also make excellent pot plants to take into a cold proch or greenhouse for the winter.
From southern Africa, particularly Zimbabwe down to the eastern Cape.
Society Garlic, Wild Garlic (it isn't garlic!).
