Rich violet purple flowers on this low growing perennial mullein. Dark green rosettes send up multiple, often branched stems to 60cm all summer. Drained soil in sun.

The flower colour is very similar to the larger, and commoner, Verbasceum phoeniceum 'Violetta' and I strongly suspect that that gets its colour from this species.  As the flower stems finish they can be pruned out low down to encourage more to be produced.

Verbascum atroviolaceum came to me as an Alpine House plant suitable for containers to show in Alpine shows, and I'm sure that you can, but we find that it does fine outside, given good drainage and sun, so no need to cosset it inside!

It's origins are mysterious!
