Anemone

Mostly woodlanders with pretty spring flowers before the trees leaf up. They associate well with other spring flowers such as Epimediums and Corydalis flexuosa but are also useful where later plants come up as the Anemones often die down in midsummer, especially if dry.

The majority of Anemones we grow now are the wood anemones, which are mostly Anemone nemorosa cultivars.  Anemone nemorosa is a British native but is also found throught much of the rest of Europe, the British plants tending to be near white (blueish or pinkish), the brighter and deeper colours mostly originate from other parts of Europe.  The wood anemones are adapted to grow in deciduous woodland which means that they come up early in the spring and flower before the trees and shrubs grow their new leaves.  The wood anemones then slowly die down during the summer as the soil dries out under the trees, remaining dormant until the following spring to start again.

Most of the anemones we offer (including the wood anemones) have an underground, twiggy, root that they grow from each spring.  This twiggy root lies just beneath the leaf litter in the wild so tends to be in the top half of pot grown plants, and may be right on the surface of the pot!  Do not be tempted to bury them too deep.  Also bear in mind that as they are dormant from midsummer to early spring you may just appear to get a pot of compost for slightly over half the year!
