A delightful bright silver foliage shrublet from Beth Chatto. Narrow leaves on upright stems topped with yellow flowers if you let it. Full sun and well drained soil. 60cm.
Without the flowers Helichrysum stoechas 'White Barn' could be confused for a particularly silvery leafed lavender with it's dense bushes of upright habit. Fortunately this plant is somewhat tougher than most lavenders but it does best with the similar occasional trim back to keep it bushy. Helichrysum will tolerate the occasional hard renovation prune in late spring if you need to.
'White Barn' looks great with other dry garden plants and is an excellent contrast with the shrubby Mexican Salvia hybrids. Also worth trying with soft grasses like Stipa tenuissima and Eragrostis curvula.
White Barn is the name of the house at Beth Chatto's in Essex. This plant has also been known as Helichrysum 'Elmstead'.
