Rarely seen compact ornamental grass with grey foliage and yellow stems supporting fingered red-purple flowers in summer to 60cm. Well drained soil in full sun.
Tightly clump forming and with low growing foliage Bothriochloa ischaemum is one of those ornamental grasses that has flown under the gardening radar for too long. The flowers are held well clear of the clump of leaves on whippy stems that move with the breeze.
Ideal for growing in sandy or gravelly soils with plenty of sun, try it mixed with Crocosmia, Sedum or Geranium sanguineum.
From warmer parts of the northern hemisphere except America.
