(Geranium pratense f. albiflorum x Geranium himalayense 'Gravetye')
Low growing hybrid with bluish-purple flowers for several weeks in summer. For the front of border in a sunny place. 30cm. A good, well-behaved clump former.
An interesting low cranesbill for the front of the border, or perhaps another possibility for groundcover under shrub or hybrid tea roses. Distinctive rounded divisions to the leaf and solid, rounded flowers with well overlapped petals make it quite different to other options like Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' or the forms of Geranium himalayense. The purple shade of the flower is also distinctive.
We find that Geranium 'Nunwood Purple' flowers for a similar time as 'Johnson's Blue' but is more inclined to repeat flower if you cut it back hard after the first flush. Totally deciduous it dies down quite early in mid-autumn, very hardy, it will be back up early the next spring.
From John Ross at Charter House in 1988. Sometimes mis-spelt Geranium 'Numwood Purple'.
