Clumps of mid green leaves to 50cm produce tall more or less upright stems topped with greenish brown flowers in mid summer to 2.4m. The heads more open than the better known 'Windspiel'. Good soil, sun.

The foliage can take on a greyish tint at times but tends more towards a soft green and like most forms of M. caerulea ssp. arundinacea the foliage does make quite a substantial clump.  Well worth surrounding it with flowering herbaceous plants to hide the leaves! Things like Monarda, Sanguisorba and Geranium pratense all work well.

The distinguishing feature of 'Windsaule' is that although the habit and size is the same as the old and popular variety 'Windspiel' the flower heads are more open when mature than that variety which has very short (if any) branches of the panicle.  Useful if you want a more light headed appearance.

Unknown origin.
