The Award of Garden Merit (AGM) issued by the Royal Hoticultural Society (RHS) helps gardeners find reliable, consistent plants that will provide particularly good value in the garden.The award is granted after trials at the RHS’ garden at Wisley in Surrey and/or assessment at specialist collections or discussion at meetings. Low growing clumps/patches of blue/green leaves with silvery margins. Short stems bearing clusters of apple green flowers which turn rusty-red from spring. 20cm.
Popular form of Wood Anemone for its bright white flowers with a ruff of bright white petalloid stamens giving a near double look. Low growing spring flower for shade and ordinary soil. 15cm.
Amazing white spathes with pink candy stripes inside appear slightly before the leaves in late spring. Big rounded trifoliate leaves make an attractive feature later. Good soil that never sits wet in shade. Flowers to 30cm, leaves to 75cm.
AGM A stunning winter-green type with large mid green leaves with a heavy pewter marbling over most of the leaf, just a narrow band of plain green round the edges. Typical pale flowers in late winter. 40cm. Average soil in part shade.
AGM An excellent and very floriferous form which produces masses of rich blue flowers with a hint of purple in late summer and autumn. Drained soil in sun, 45cm.
AGM Neat clumps of glossy green foliage and short spikes of bright reddish-purple flowers in summer. Compact plants for the front of the border. Average soil in sun. 25cm.
AGM The best form of this species in our opinion! Light grey-blue-pink flowers on tall strong stems in summer to 1.8m. Best in good soil in sun or light shade.
AGM An excellent small flowered pom-pom type of hardy Chrysanth in a glowing acid yellow. A lovely contrast to the warmer colours in autumn. Drained soil in sun, 90cm.
A recent introduction from Kurt Bluemel. Dwarf growth to only 1.4m. Steely grey foliage and warm buff flowers from July (rather than October as with other cultivars). Full sun, evergreen.
AGM Near white flowers soon flush pink then near purple on dark burgundy stems over clumps of striking leaves the same colour. Full sun, drained soil. 60cm.
AGM A elegant species with slender bright reddish pink flowers with purple corollas and red filaments. Smallish but broad leaves try to be evergreen. Borderline hardy - drained soil in a sheltered position, light shade. 60cm?
AGM Unusual lanceolate leaves on a willowy upright plant producing masses of elegant red and purple flowers from midsummer. Distinctive reddish stems. Should be hardy in drained soil, best in some shade.
AGM A good doer with broad grey-green leaves and generous bright white flowers with a single green mark on the inner "petals". Average soil in sun or light shade. 20cm.
A really good bulbous plant for a sunny, well drained site. Funnels of broad greyish leaves and strong upright stems with spikes of large white bells in summer to 90cm.
AGM A mound of large pale blue flowers veined crimson. 45cm. Flowering June-August onwards. Reasonable soil in open or sunny position. Unique colour for a long flowering plant.
AGM This brilliant hybrid from Cambridge Botanic Garden has intense blue flowers with white centres from May to July and September onwards. Open position in average soil. 60cm x 90cm. Named after a street in Cambridge.
Like 'Brookside' but with darker blue flowers, 5cm across. The stuff of myth! Average soil in sun, 70cm. Summer with good repeat and super foliage colour in autumn.
A recent introduction with very compact growth and masses of small deep pink flowers in late spring. Not really a groundcover but a spreading patch to 15cm high.
AGM Pure white flowers without the usual pink calyx. Introduced from Mount Olympus by Liverpool Botanic Garden. Shame Vits didn't have this for her "pale garden"! Deciduous.
